A month ago I was working with Simone Gers, my amazingly gifted psychic friend about writer’s conferences. She got the hit that I should attend EroticonUSA and enter the contest. She felt I would meet someone there who would be helpful for my career, and that it would be a great opportunity to network with other writers.
Attending conferences is an expensive proposition when you throw in the travel, not to mention I have small children and a husband who leaves the house at 5 am every morning so being away creates a challenge for the whole family. But, like anything, if you take the leap, the net appears. Two friends pitched in to help with the kids, Lori from Kink, etc hooked me up with a great hotel and off I went!
I’m so grateful I took the leap of faith, as Simone’s predictions were true. I won the EroticonUSA Next Top Erotic Author contest, which means I’ll be working with Lori Perkins, editor of Riverdale Avenue Books to publish my new mafia spanking romance The Bossman.
I met amazing people!
I can’t wait to go back!
Here are some highlights:
The opening plenary was by Jincey Lumpkin, Esq, the “lesbian Hugh Hefner” who spoke to my heart. She believes authenticity is crucial to success in the erotic industry and so addressing our own shame is necessary. Being my authentic self seems to be my theme for the year, and for me, that means not hiding in a closet about what I write and integrating the whole of who I am. I’m working on my bio (still in progress, but evolving) so that it more authentically represents who I really am.
I attended thoughtful sessions presented by Annabel Joseph, Tasha Harrison, Linzy Antoinette, Aisling Weaver and Jack Stratton, and a live kink demonstration by Gray Dancer (whoa, super hot!– I bought his how to tie them up and fuck them video, so I’ll do a review on that soon!).
I also had the pleasure of rubbing elbows with all kinds of wonderful people, including the luminous organizer of the event, the talented Ruby Kiddell, who deserves a huge shout-out for bringing the conference to the U.S.
